Media Types

The media definitions section defines the types of media users will be able to create in iCM. This gives system administrators control over the type of file that will appear on the site, limit the size of files, and determine image sizes.

To create a new media definition select "Create a media type" from the action panel.

To edit an existing type, double-click on it. Once a media type is in use, editing it is restricted - you are able to change the description, icon and add new file extensions to existing components.

You can only delete media types that are not in use. If you do need to delete a type, you'll first have to delete all of the media items of that type.

Properties

All media types must have a name and description. As well as appearing in iCM, the name is also used to create the directory name within the media directory of your web server's file system.

The icon is visible within iCM. A 17x17 *.gif or *.png image works best.

Components

Components allow multiple files to be associated with a single media item. They allow you to create different sizes, aspect ratios or file types within the same media item.

This is most commonly seen when working with images. You might have "Thumbnail" and "Large" resolutions of the same image, which will appear in different places, depending on how the image is used on your site.

Some website themes use components with video files. The Dynamic Theme has a video media type with a special "poster image" component, displayed when the video is not being played.

In most cases you'll only need one component. A PDF file, for example, would only have a single component for the .pdf file extension.

Each component is made up of:

PropertyDescription
NameThe name of this component. This name may appear on your website, as well as in iCM. Names can only contain alphanumeric characters and must start with a letter
Allowed file typesA comma separated list of acceptable file extensions (in the format *.pdf for example) for the files that can be uploaded for this component
Max file sizeThe maximum file size users can upload. Note, there will also be file size restrictions at the server level
MandatoryCheck this box to force users to create this component
UploadComponent files may either be held in the iCM Media library or sourced from some external location. Check this option to copy the file to the media library when media items of this type are created. Uncheck this option to specify the reference path of a media file from an external repository when media items of this type are created or amended
Image editorCheck this box to enable the iCM image editor when users are creating image media items
Width and heightDefine minimum and maximum dimensions for images. Images will be automatically resized to these dimensions when they are created.

Users with the Resize Control media Content Privileges can override these dimensions

Index Files

The iCM search automatically indexes the titles, descriptions and keywords of media items.

If you check this box iCM will also index the internal content of suitable file types. This is most commonly used with Word, Excel and PDF files, but will also work with xml, txt, html and a range of other text based document types.

Take care! Turning this feature on or off will immediately start a reindex of all existing media items which will increase load on the server.
