Home Template

The Chill Home template is highly configurable. It can display a carousel, section tiles, related pages, related feature groups (lists of articles) and a background image.

The design of the Home template allows it to be used in three broad modes. The standard homepage displays a carousel, blocks that link to sections of the site, a row of related articles and lists of feature articles. An extended mode adds a tab component alongside the carousel (instead of the blocks) and uses the list views of related articles to drill-down into site content. The template can also be used as a "landing page", in which standard page content (the title, introductory text and body text) are displayed and the article blocks are arranged beneath.

Breadcrumb, Title and Body Content

The Home template would not normally display the page title, breadcrumb or body content. When configured to do so, these appear as per the Default template, above all other items. These items are toggled on and off using the "Show Article Content" and "Show Breadcrumb" options in the article extras.

Background Image

To display a background image behind the carousel and tiles, relate an image of the "Background" media type to the article using the Home template.

Carousel

The carousel displays a series of articles. These articles are taken from the first feature group related to the Home template.

When enabled, the carousel appears in the top left corner of the main content area. Each carousel article supplies an image which fills the containing area. The text panel includes a title, summary and links to the full article. Navigation arrows and a clickable dot for each panel let the user scroll through the carousel.

Should the carousel article not provide an image, the site's stylesheet provides a default background colour.

The carousel displays the articles of the Home template's first related feature group when the "Show Carousel" option in the article extras is set to "Yes". When "Show Carousel" is set as "No" the first related feature group appears as part of the "Feature Groups" section (see below). Each carousel panel contains:

  • The carousel image is the first image related to the article in the feature group that is not deemed to be a system type (ie, not an icon or banner)
  • The panel title is the feature article's heading
  • The panel description is the feature article's summary text

The articles in your feature group can use any template type, including the Redirect template.

Section Blocks

Around the carousel any number of section blocks can be displayed. In the template's article extras you can choose whether to use the direct child articles of the homepage, or the articles selected in its article extras (allowing you to pick articles from anywhere in the site).

When the Home Template article is the subsite's home page, each block article can provide its own icon and colour.

  • The icon is the first image related to the block article of the "icon" media type.
  • The colour is the first related metadata value of the property set in the "Menu style modifier" option in the subsite configuration. These values match CSS classes found in the site's stylesheet. When the page is rendered, the browser will use the corresponding style rule in the site's stylesheet to determine the colour of the section tile.

If the home page is set to display its child articles as blocks, these colours and icons are cascaded down to all levels of child article in that section.

Tab Component

Chill Tab Component
The article extras of the Home template let you switch between "Blocks" and "Tabs". If you select Blocks, the articles appear as described above. If you select Tabs the first four articles (either child articles or selected articles) appear as a panel in the top right of the main content area, next to the carousel. If the carousel has been disabled the tab panel will appear in the top left of the page.

The articles chosen as tabs behave differently, depending on the template they use.

Default Tabs

Default tabs display their title and article summary with a link to the full article.

List Tabs

List tabs display their title, summary and configured list items. Each list item links to the appropriate article. The tab title links to the full list.

Redirect Tab

A redirect tab displays the redirect article's title and summary. The link in the tab panel links to the target of the redirect article.

Related Articles

Any number of articles can be related to the Home template to appear in rows beneath the carousel and section blocks or tabs. The page title of each article acts as a link to the full article. An article summary and picture, if available, are also displayed.

If the related article uses the List template, links to its list items can be displayed beneath the summary. If present, the picture acts as a link to the article. The icon and coloured bar for each article are inherited from the section of the site the article is in.

Featured Groups

Beneath the related articles any number of featured groups of articles can be displayed. The groups appear in two columns and each group can contain any number of articles. The title of each feature group provides the group heading and the title of each article populates the list of links.

Note: When the "Show Carousel" item in the article extras is set to "Yes", the first feature group will provide the content of the carousel and this area will only contain the second and subsequent feature groups.

"Top Tasks" Mode

This image shows the Home template set up in an extended "top tasks" mode.  The top level menu has had the extended mode enabled, the page includes a carousel and tab component, related articles have been configured to show their own list items, and two feature groups have been included.

  2. Carousel
  3. Tab component instead of blocks
  4. Related articles using the List template, each displaying their first related image, summary and first three list items
